For a point of
reference, you can assume that we are 3 hours from I-95 where it
meets US-70 in Selma NC.
The closest town of any
size is Morehead City, North Carolina.
Air:
We are one mile from the Cedar Island-Ocracoke NC Ferry System terminal so you can
always follow signs to the Cedar Island Ferry. Stay overnight here
and avoid a long ride to motels in Morehead
City!
Directions To
Cedar Island & Pelicans Rest From
I-95
·
At
Selma (Look for “JR’s”
billboards) take US 70 East. From here it is about 3 hours to the
Island.
·
The only “get lost” potential is approaching
Goldsboro….make sure you
stay on 70E, direction Morehead. You go up on a cloverleaf to a
bridge that crosses over where you just were. It is easy to miss the
Morehead sign and go south.
·
Easiest
route is: stay on 70E through New
Bern,
Havelock,
Morehead
City and Beaufort (but it
is much shorter to take a turn off at
Havelock (Cherry Point
Marine Air Station)
·
Shortest route is: be alert
as you approach Havelock
- you’ll see government quarters for the Marine Air Station on your
left and to the right an Eckerds and Kentucky Fried Chicken. You’ll
see a North Carolina Ferry sign just before the big intersection and
light. You’re going to the direction of the “Cedar Island
Ferry”. Take that left
and go for about 20 miles.
·
You’ll cross a big bridge over the Intercoastal
Waterway. About a mile
beyond that bridge you’ll see another NC Ferry sign, a BP Station on
the right, and a big boat building plant on your left. Turn left
there.
·
After about 2-3 miles the road dead ends into a
“T”. Turn
right.
·
After about 4-5 miles you’ll come to a traffic
light and rejoin US 70. Turn left.
·
Stay on 70 through about 5 villages. Watch your
speed - they’re enforcing heavy..no more than 5 MPH
over.
·
After Stacy, you’ll cross a big, curved bridge
and see a sign for “Sea Level”. US 70 turns right there --- you go
straight on Hwy 12, do not turn…follow the Ferry
Signs.
·
Proceed and you’ll cross a huge bridge and then
about 3 miles of salt marsh. At the end of the marsh the road makes
a SHARP turn - look out!
·
You’re on
Cedar
Island. Stay straight
we’re 2.4 miles from the Cedar Island Wildlife Refuge sign. About ½
mile past the Methodist
Church on your left, look
on your right for a green street type sign in our front yard with
“3100 Johnson”. Proceed into the drive way and park near the suite
which is on the left side of the house as you drive in.
